Startup Advance — Mercedes-Benz Vans Accelerator
Startup Advance was a competitive accelerator program run by Mercedes-Benz Vans (now Mercedes-Benz Mobility). The program selected only a handful of startups globally to explore future solutions for commercial vehicles and mobility. CargoBeacon was selected to participate in the 2017–2018 cohort.
Based in Stuttgart, Germany — the heart of the German automotive industry — the program provided access to Mercedes-Benz Vans engineering teams and test facilities. It was a unique opportunity to validate IoT technology in one of the world's most demanding industrial environments.
What We Explored
The focus was on IoT-based asset and cargo tracking for commercial van fleets. The core question: can you know in real time exactly what's loaded in a delivery van — and verify it against what should be loaded?
Load Verification
Confirm what's actually loaded vs. the dispatch order — reducing misdeliveries and returns.
Bluetooth Mesh Sensing
Bluetooth mesh network inside the cargo area — a challenging RF environment with metal walls and reflections.
Real-Time Visibility
Continuous monitoring of cargo inside delivery vans throughout the delivery route.
Platform Integration
Integration potential with Mercedes PRO connect — the existing vehicle fleet management platform.
Use Cases Explored
Last-Mile Delivery
Track parcels and goods through the full delivery chain to the end customer.
Service Van Tool Tracking
Service vans carrying expensive tools — always know where every tool is located.
Temperature-Sensitive Cargo
Monitor cargo area temperature for pharmaceuticals, food, and other sensitive goods.
Why It Matters
Being selected by one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers was an early and significant validation of CargoBeacon's technology and vision. The program was an exploratory pilot — not a production contract — but the insights shaped our product development for years to come.
Tier-1 OEM Validation
Demonstrated that CargoBeacon's IoT technology meets the standards demanded by a global automotive producer.
RF in Metal Environments
Early proof that Bluetooth mesh (later Wirepas) works reliably in challenging RF environments with metal van bodies.
EverTag Insights
Insights from the program shaped the design of the EverTag product family developed in the years that followed.
Startup Meets Enterprise
Showed that startup-grade IoT can meet the quality and process standards of the automotive industry.
About Startup Advance
Startup Advance was Mercedes-Benz Vans' program to identify and collaborate with the most promising startups in future mobility and commercial vehicles. The program was highly competitive — only a handful of startups were selected globally each year.
